Southern 4-Ingredient Butter Dip Biscuits

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1½ cups buttermilk
  • ½ cup (1 stick) butter, melted

(Salt is often added—about ½–1 tsp—but some versions skip it if using salted butter.)

👩‍🍳 Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 450°F (230°C).
  2. Melt the butter
    • Pour melted butter into an 8×8 or 9×9 baking dish, spreading evenly.
  3. Mix dry ingredients
    • In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, sugar (and salt if using).
  4. Add buttermilk
    • Stir until just combined. The dough will be very soft and sticky—don’t overmix.
  5. Spread dough over butter
    • Gently spread the dough directly into the baking dish over the melted butter.
  6. Score before baking
    • Use a knife to cut the dough into 9 squares (this helps portioning later).
  7. Bake
    • Bake for 20–25 minutes, until the top is golden brown and crispy.

✨ Tips

  • Don’t overmix—this keeps them fluffy.
  • The butter creates that crispy, golden crust on the bottom and edges.
  • Serve warm—they’re amazing with honey, jam, or gravy.
