Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1½ cups buttermilk
- ½ cup (1 stick) butter, melted
(Salt is often added—about ½–1 tsp—but some versions skip it if using salted butter.)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 450°F (230°C).
- Melt the butter
- Pour melted butter into an 8×8 or 9×9 baking dish, spreading evenly.
- Mix dry ingredients
- In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, sugar (and salt if using).
- Add buttermilk
- Stir until just combined. The dough will be very soft and sticky—don’t overmix.
- Spread dough over butter
- Gently spread the dough directly into the baking dish over the melted butter.
- Score before baking
- Use a knife to cut the dough into 9 squares (this helps portioning later).
- Bake
- Bake for 20–25 minutes, until the top is golden brown and crispy.
Tips
- Don’t overmix—this keeps them fluffy.
- The butter creates that crispy, golden crust on the bottom and edges.
- Serve warm—they’re amazing with honey, jam, or gravy.
